Release

Dhum is a mixture of two cliches. One, the rich girl-poor boy love story, is an old and oft-seen one while the other, a young man standing up to someone in power, has gained popularity in recent times with the success of Dhill and Dhool. BalajiBbalasubramanian of Thiraipadam.com claims that's "its uninspired treatment of a cliched story and over-stylized actions". The film performed well at the box office and it was declared as a hit.

Plot

A violently depressed Madhan (Silambarasan) arrives at a hospital seeking psychiatric counselling. This proves to be a ruse, however, and he craftily seduces the psychiatrist (Mandira Bedi). Subsequently, he kills her.
Madhan Kumar is shown to be an accounts manager who also studies music. A shy college student Mythili (Jyothika) has a nightmare of Madhan (whom she has never met before) raping her, and fears him when she meets him in real life. Intrigued by her behaviour, he approaches and befriends her. She soon realizes that he is by all accounts a good person, and starts to love him. However, every night Madhan stalks various women who are morally corrupt, seduces and kills them. Every time he embraces a woman with the intent of seducing her, his nose begins to bleed (a characteristic trait). Assistant Commissioner Deva (Atul Kulkarni) is assigned to bring the serial killer to justice.
Mythili eventually discovers proof that Madhan is the killer and raper and hands him over to the police. Held in police custody, Madhan reveals that the killer is actually his younger brother Madhan Raj (also Silambarasan). Madhanraj's motives are explained in a flashback:
Madhan Raj, a simple village youth arrives in Coimbatore to attend college, sharing a room with an irreverent student Bobby (Santhanam). He is approached by his classmate Vaishnavi (Sindhu Tolani) and soon starts to love her unconditionally. His love is fueled by his innocence and ethical values. The relationship progresses as far as a marriage proposal; however, a squabble starts as Madhanraj suspects an affair between Vaishnavi and her classmate Seenu. He arrives at Vaishnavi's house to ask her forgiveness. By chance, Madhanraj looks into her bedroom window and finds her sleeping with Seenu. He also overhears her saying that she never loved him, and merely accepted his proposal to divert his suspicion of her affair.
Heartbroken and revolted, Madhanraj confronts her, saying he knows the truth. When she denies it, he lashes out and accidentally kills her. Initially he grieves over his act, but realizes that she deserved it for cheating, and intentionally kills Seenu as well. He arrives at his brother Madhan Kumar's house and reveals his crime. He also reveals that he will further continue his killing spree and murder all unfaithful women. Madhan Kumar looks on helpless as Madhanraj dons the identity of "Manmadhan" (cupid) and flees into the night.
Madhan Kumar ends his flashback, and is released. Mythili apologizes for believing him to be a killer, and admits that she loves him deeply. However, the actual events that spurred the birth of Manmadhan are revealed (only to the audience):
After killing Vaishnavi and Seenu, Madhanraj was, in fact, remorseful and depressed over the events that led to this. He confesses to his brother and soon afterwards, locks himself in his room and prepares to commit suicide. Madhan Kumar watches horrified and helpless, as his younger brother hangs himself and loses his life. Madhan Kumar enters the room and embraces his brother's corpse, and suffers a nosebleed. He swears to avenge his brother's death by killing unfaithful women everywhere; thus it was Madhan Kumar himself who became Manmadhan. It is hinted that his exploits will continue.

Plot

The movie begins with the engagement of Saravana's sister (Tharika). The house is full of joy and laughter, awaiting the return of Saravana from college. However, when Saravana (Silambarasan) returns, the family members are shocked. He has brought home a distraught and frightened girl, whom he introduces as his friend, Sadhana (Jyothika).
The marriage preparations continue, with everyone wondering who the mysterious girl is. Saravana's uncle (Nizhalgal Ravi), however, cannot control his emotions. He wants his daughter (Meghna Naidu) to marry Saravana, and is afraid that Sadhana will spoil this. Eventually, Saravana's uncle confronts him about Sadhana. Saravana gets upset and an argument ensues. Later, as Saravana and Sadhana go to a restaurant to eat, a gang comes. Saravana chases them for a while, and beats all of them up. Realising he has left Sadhana behind, Saravana returns to the restaurant. However, Sadhana is not there. Frightened, he returns home, to find Sadhana there. She was rescued by her brother's assistant. Finally, Saravana's father (Radha Ravi) forces him to tell them what is going on. Then, a flashback begins.
Saravana and Krishna (Five Star fame Krishna) are close friends. One day, Saravana sees Krishna's sister, Sadhana, on a video recording and immediately falls in love with her. At that moment, she is studying in London. After learning that she would be going home for the holidays, he follows Krishna home for the holidays, in an attempt to woo her. When he arrives at the village, Saravana is greeted by Krishna's elder brother Soundarapandi (Prakash Raj). Soundarapandi's wife (Eswari Rao) treats Saravana like a brother and dotes on him. Eventually, Saravana is told about the caste clashes occurring in the village.
Soon, Sadhana arrives. Saravana tries hard to impress her but faces many difficulties. Strangely, he does not tell her about his love and devotion. However, the other family members eventually become aware of his love, and they approve of him. When Sadhana takes Saravana to the temple for a visit without anyone's knowledge, the rival group is attacked by Sadhana's brother's gang. The rival then holds Sadhana hostage and threatens to kill her. In a swift action of bravery and skill, Saravana knocks down the rival group member.
After this incident, Soundarapandi tells Saravana why things are so violent in the village. He explains how he is a masters degree holder from a prestigious university and how his wife is also a masters degree holder. Unfortunately, due the nature of the villages, the rivalry is deadly and fatal. He ultimately says, even though the villages are violent, he will remain a noble person, with high ideals. At the temple festival, Soundarapandi carries a plate with the saree that Saravana bought for Sadhana before coming to the village. He wants to seek the blessings of the goddess Amman for the marriage. However, Sadhana is unaware of this. Trouble ensues when the rival gang kill the rest of Sadhana's family, forcing Saravana and Sadhana to flee the village. Soundarapandi's last wish was for Saravana to take care of Sadhana and marry her.
The story shifts back to Saravana's household, and Saravana plans to send Sadhana to London. This is because the enemy will not be able to find her there. His family does not approve because they know of his love for her. By now, Sadhana has also fallen in love with him and his family. However, she agrees to leave because she thinks that he has no such feelings for her. Soundarapandi's assistant, who managed to escape the village, gives Sadhana the green saree, saying that it was supposed to be her brother's gift to her.
On the day Sadhana is supposed to leave to London, she wears the green saree. At the airport, she meets Saravana's college mate. The girl tells Sadhana about Saravana's devotion for her. She also tells her that the green saree was bought by Saravana after much deliberation, and that she had to endure his torture of visiting many shops to find the perfect saree. Sadhana is surprised. She realises she cannot leave Saravana, and leaves the airport. She manages to find Saravana, who is fighting the villains. At the end, they embrace and the movie ends.

Critical reception

The Hindu wrote: "Vallavan's basic sketch is simpler than Manmadhan, though the maker has lent it his trademark frills".
Sify gave 2.5/5 stars to Vallavan and said: "If you are looking for some wholesome entertainment, then Vallavan is worth your time and money".
Behindwoods.com commented: "On a positive note, the glamorous quotient of three heroines along with music and the youth element can play to Vallavan’s advantage".
Oneindia wrote: "Yuvan's music and Santhanam's comedy provide the much-needed relief as the film's dark and tension filled screenplay roils throughout with murky games of passion and revenge."

Box office

Vallavan received mixed reviews from all sources. The film also featured, prior to release, in "most awaited" list from entertainment sites. The film got a grand release for Diwali 2006 along with other films like Ajith's Varalaru, Jiiva's E, Arya's Vattaram and Sarath Kumar's Thalaimagan. Due to the pre-release hype it created, Vallavan received a very good opening, but collections started declining and the film ended up as an average grosser.

Controversies

While filming for Vallavan, Nayantara was romantically linked with the film's director and co-actor Silambarasan Rajendar. She initially denied the reports. In November 2006, however, she confirmed that she and Silambarasan had broken up, going on to add that she will not work with him again. At the time of their affair, pictures of intimate moments between Simbu and Nayantara got leaked on the internet which were later claimed by Simbu to be released by him. They began appearing together in public and the affair soon gained media and public attention.

Plot

Vichu (Silambarasan) is a quiet youngster brought up by the village priest (Nedumudi Venu) and his maternal grandfather. Owing to specific reasons, the caring elder has purposefully toned down (Simbu uses his eyes to convey the inner quietude of Vichu) the young boy's emotional quotient and has taught him a peculiar art of living. As a result, Vichu is soft-spoken, passive and is groomed to tolerate all sorts of malicious misdemeanors aimed at him. Vichu assists his grandfather in carrying out the religious rituals as well as being the care-taker of the temple. Vichu's only consolation comes in the company of his sweetheart Janu (Sana Khan). Janu's kiddish jokes and teasing remarks make up for all the precious and youthful moments he has missed in his growing-up years. The film has anti-Brahmin themes and follows many films of its class in projecting the Brahmin girls and aunts in the raunchy yet in a funny way.
Though Simbu abides by the elderly person's advices, an incident that happens in the temple premises reveals his real persona. On the particular day, Vichu witnesses a big band of ruffians bashing a seemingly meek individual. Becoming furious at the sight of the power-play, Vichu gets into the tussle and saves the victim. But, as the man takes a hard look at his savior face, he is stunned! What is the secrecy in Vichu's past? How does it intimidate the stranger?
Cut to a flashback, there is a huge clash between the two village groups headed by Muthuvel (Prabhu) and Veeraiyan (Ponvannan). Reason? Veeriayan claims back every bit of land he has donated to the landless and poor villagers whereas Muthuvel and his brother Tamizh ( Silambarasan ) oppose his order. In the violent power-struggle, too many people die. It includes the fervent activist Tamizh, his dear wife Gayathri ( Sneha ) and Veeraiyan himself.Veeraiyan stabs himself and says that Tamizh stabbed him to death. The police come in search of Tamizh but he is missing in the house. He is with Gayathri on that night in a goods train.Tamizh is produced before court and as he was missing on that night,he is doubted and granted punishment. But Gayathri intervenes and says that she spent that night along with Tamizh on that train. She says that they made love. It's proven and Tamizh is released.Only Veeraiyan's last son Duraisingham (Kishore of Polladhavan fame) and Muthuvel are spared in the tragedy. The burning intensity of the mishap stays alive in Duraisingham's heart and Muthuvel is another witness to the past. What happens next? Duraisingam enters Muthuvel's house and kills everyone including Tamizh.A large group of rowdies enter and kill the rest.It is revealed that Gayathri escapes to her father's home and later gives birth to Vichu and die. The rest of the film is about Vichu settling the long-term dispute and explaining the situation to his grandfather.

Development

In September 2007, early indications suggested that Lakshmi Movie Makers were set to make a film starring T. R. Silambarasan directed by Saravanan. Simbu confirmed the project and stating that he had put on weight and grew a beard for his participation in the project. Following the flop of Kaalai, Silambarasan started immediately to commencing his shoot for the film. The film was launched at AVM Studios on 7 December 2007. Silambattam was 25th film for "Lakshmi Movie Makers". The 40-member unit consisting of Silambarasan, director Saravanan, cameraman Mathi, action choreographer Kanal Kannan and a few stunt men from Chennai began their first schedule for a 10 day stint.

Nowrunning wrote: "There is nothing to write home about in this routine film except that it is a wasted attempt by Silambarasan". Sify wrote: "Silambattam is a typical mass masala entertainer. It is another 'Formulaic' film revolving around a larger than life hero, who romances, does comedy". Hindu wrote: "What begins as a fairly suspenseful narrative dwindles into a run-of-the-mill line post-interval. Tales of vendetta have been churned out ever so many times". Kollywood today wrote: "On the whole, Silambattam is a flick that is better to avoid watching".

Vinnaithaandi Varuvaayaa (English: Will you cross the skies?) is a 2010 Tamil romantic drama film directed and written by Gautham Vasudev Menon, featuring Silambarasan Rajendar and Trisha Krishnan in the lead roles. Also featuring the Malayalam super action star Babu Antony in a major and never seen before role. The film, distributed by Udhayanidhi Stalin, features a successful soundtrack composed by A. R. Rahman, cinematography by Manoj Paramahamsa and editing by Anthony Gonsalves. The story was simultaneously shot and released by Gautham in Telugu as Ye Maaya Chesave, starring Naga Chaitanya and Samantha Ruth Prabhu, however, with a different cast and climax.
Launched by a wave of publicity posters with no details about the cast and crew, Vinnaithaandi Varuvaayaa began its initial run in February 2009. Shooting continued through 2009, with the film garnering significant media interest, through schedules in Malta and the United States. Before release, it became the first Tamil project to have a music soundtrack premiere outside of India, with a successful launch at the British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) in London.
Vinnaithaandi Varuvaayaa explores the complicated relationship between a Hindu Tamil assistant director, Karthik, and a Syrian Christian Malayali girl, Jessie Thekekuttu. Karthik falls in love with Jessie only to be met by her indifference and reluctance as they belong to different religions and her strict conservative family will never consent. Undeterred Karthik pursues her, going as far as her native town. She also falls in love with him. However, they have to face many problems and emotional conflicts. The film released on 26 February 2010, along with the Telugu version to advance bookings worldwide. Upon release, it achieved positive reviews, with several critics giving "modern classic" status, whilst also becoming a commercially successful venture. It was later remade in Hindi as Ekk Deewana Tha starring Prateik Babbar and Amy Jackson, which was not as successful.

Plot

Karthik (Silambarasan) is a graduate Mechanical Engineering in Chennai who aspires to become a filmmaker. His friend introduces him to cinematographer Ganesh (Ganesh Janardhanan). With Ganesh's help Karthik becomes an assistant to director K. S. Ravikumar. Karthik's family, who are Tamil Hindu Veerakodi Vellalars (Vellalar), rent Jessie's (Trisha Krishnan) house. Jessie is from a conservative Malayali Nasrani Christian family from Alappuzha, Kerala, that lives upstairs. Karthik falls in love with Jessie the moment he meets her. Karthik tries to interact with Jessie (Trisha), who is afraid of speaking to men around her strict father, and ends up angering her. Unable to hide his feelings any longer, Karthik confesses his love for her; she does not respond. A few days later, Karthik learns from his sister that Jessie has gone to Kerala to visit her grandmother. He and Ganesh end up in Kerala to look for her. After several days, he finds her and apologises. She introduces him to her family in Kerala as her "classmate". Jessie denies she has any feelings for him but agrees to be his friend. On the train journey back home, however, the two get close and share a kiss. Karthik is convinced Jessie loves him; the two meet several times and Jessie begins to admit that she also likes Karthik, but wants to refrain from any problems because she knows her father wouldn't give her hand in marriage to a Hindu. Consequently, due to various misunderstandings between Jessie's brother and Karthik, her parents learn of their supposed affair. They fix a match and schedule her wedding. The day arrives and midway through the ceremony, Jessie refuses to marry the groom, displeasing everyone in her family. Karthik, who had, without anyone's knowledge, come to Kerala to witness the wedding is ecstatic and secretly visits Jessie at her home. It is then that Jessie admits she has indeed fallen in love with him. Karthik and Jessie continue to love each other without the knowledge of their parents.
At this point of time, Karthik goes to Goa on a 45-day shoot, where he gets rather busy. Meanwhile, the topic of Jessie's marriage comes up again at her home when the guy whom she refused to marry earlier pays them a visit. Panicking, Jessie calls Karthik and tells him that she wants to elope with him. Karthik, since he is travelling through less than ideal places, tells Jessie to stay in Chennai for now, and that soon he would be back and they can discuss. Jessie stops taking Karthik's calls and so he goes back one night to check on Jessie. He comes to know that Jessie has decided to break up, as the relationship is not peaceful due to her parents' disapproval. She says she has agreed to get married to a boy of their choice. When Karthik pleads her not to do it, she tells him that a time had come when she was willing to elope, but the moment was gone. She doesn't want Karthik to wait for her too long, as he has his dreams to fulfill. Karthik later comes to know that she is married and settled abroad.
Two years later, Karthik meets Nandini (Samantha Ruth Prabhu). She falls in love with him, but is rejected by Karthik by saying that he hasn't yet gotten over Jessie. He then comes up with a script for his first film, which happens to be his very own love story. He calls upon Naga Chaitanya Akkineni as the film's protagonist, Nandini as the female lead and Ganesh as the film's cinematographer, and the film is eventually titled Jessie. While shooting for the film in New York, he sees Jessie and she comes to speak with him. She admits that she is not married and is still in love with him, and he too says she is still in his heart. Karthik proposes yet again and they get married the same day. This is actually revealed to be the end scene in Karthik's movie – which Karthik and Jessie in real life are watching together in the theatre. After it gets over, it is revealed to the audience that Jessie had in fact seen Karthik in New York but had not come forward to meet him. She is married now and hence asks Karthik to fall in love again and move on. She tells Karthik that they cannot lead a life which is full of obstacles and they part, once and for all to lead different lives and different destinies.

Development

In late January 2009, speculation arose surrounding a potential collaboration between Silambarasan Rajendar, Gautham Menon and A. R. Rahman, but none confirmed the news. In a surprise move, in early February 2009 a poster appeared in Indian papers featuring Silambarasan, but with no names of crew members. This was a significant move as this was Gautham's first project after his split with Harris Jayaraj. Furthermore, the early poster suggested that the film was titled Vinnaithaandi Varuvaayaa, in homage to the song "Vennilavae Vennilavae" from the 1997 film, Minsaara Kanavu. Subsequently, each day leading up to Valentine's Day saw the launch of a new poster, still without details of the crew except the inclusion of Trisha Krishnan as the lead actress; posters released after the one tributing Minsara Kanavu were those of stills from Dil Se.., Alaipayuthey, Kaakha Kaakha and Geethanjali. It eventually surfaced as a Gautham Menon film, with music by Rahman and cinematography by Manoj Paramahamsa. Gautham stated that the movie would be his return to the love genre after having directed action thriller post his debut venture, Minnale. Nagarjuna Akkineni approached Gautham Menon to do a Telugu version simultaneously. He agreed and the scenes were shot at the same time. Menon cited that he was "a week away from starting the film with a newcomer" before his producer insisted they looked at Silambarasan, with Menon revealing that he was unimpressed with the actor's previous work.[unreliable source?]

Filming

The shooting started on 14 February 2009 and was held in several locations as New York City, Malta, Kerala, Chennai, Trichy, Thanjavur and Rome. The songs were shot in Malta at sets and choreographed by Flexy Stu. Before release, the film was passed with a U/A (Parental Guidance) rating by the Indian Censor Board due to intimate scenes between Silambarasan and Trisha.

Release

The satellite rights of the film were bagged by Kalaignar. The film was given a "U/A" certificate by the Indian Censor Board.

Critical reception

The film opened to positive reviews from critics. Oneindia.in said "The slow phase of the second half and frequent use of bad words (Chennai Tamil) are major minuses in Goutham's narration. But these are all not preventing one to enjoy the content of true and painful love of the film!"
Sify said that it was "Very good" further citing "The film is a must watch for those who cares for cinema of sense and substance. It stresses the fact that Tamil cinema has to break the mould if it aims to grab eyeballs. Gautham Menon has crafted a movie that will stay in our hearts for a long, long time." Indiaglitz stated "If and only if, you have all the time in the world, and you like the slow romantic genre, you'll enjoy this one."
Pavithra Srinivasan of Rediff.com called the film a "Must watch" further citing "The best part about VTV is that it revolves around people, rather than events. It's like putting a camera into the intimate, everyday life of two people and following them on their adventures. The characters go through a whirlwind of emotions, laugh and cry, and take you along with them." However, the reviewer points out certain drawbacks in the film citing "On the minus side, VTV suffers from the same defect as Vaaranam Aayiram: the second half lags in pace. The dialogues and confrontations are repetitive. There's a would-be love-track that seems unnecessary before the story takes off again."
Malathi Rangarajan from The Hindu said "Twenty two-year old Karthik's true-to-life overtures, reactions and recklessness are just as you would expect from a director of Menon's calibre. It is his authentic depiction of Jessie's confusion that's all the more amazing – Menon's complete understanding of a woman's psyche bowls you over! So do the young lovers!" Aravindan D. I. of nowrunning.com gave the film three stars out of five and said "Gautam Vasudev Menon's "Vinnai Thaandi Varuvaaya" is a clean romantic story without any deviation or sub-plots."
Chennai Online said, Vinnaithaandi Varuvaayaa (VTV) is an excellent effort on the part of Gautam Vasudev Menon in narrating a clean romantic story without any deviation from the plot" and further cited "As is Menon’s forte, the dialogues and the execution of scenes are top-notch. The joys of falling of love and the pangs of separation have been portrayed well. The way Simbu nurtures his love for Jesse and the positive but ambiguous reactions from Trisha to his overtures are very nice indeed."

Box office

Vinnai Thaandi Varuvaaya took a grand opening, grossing around INR6.7 million (US$110,000) in its first three days in Chennai. The film grossed INR57.5 million (US$960,000) at the Chennai box office in the 12th weekend. It totally grossed INR300 million (US$5.0 million) and was officially declared a commercial success.

Soundtrack

The soundtrack was composed by A. R. Rahman. Vinnaithaandi Varuvaayaa marked the beginning of a collaboration between Rahman and Gautham Menon.
The world premiere was held at BAFTA in London on 19 December 2009 and later it was relaunched in Chennai on 12 January 2010. The album consists of seven tracks released with positive responses and was appreciated. The audio received overwhelming pre-release response and was marked as No. 1 in Asia, in advance bookings. The album was ranked among the best musicals of 2011.

He cons her into believing he is well off, and adopts a well-bred persona in front of her. They finally arrive in Chennai, but their vehicle collides with an auto-rickshaw carrying a pregnant woman. Sacrificing their concert, Bharath and Laasya rush her to the hospital.
Saroja (Anushka) is a prostitute working at Rani Amma's brothel at the Tamil Nadu-Andhra border. When she discovers that her life is constantly in danger while working there, she escapes to Chennai with her co-worker Karpooram (Nikki), a eunuch, in hopes of starting her own business venture. Production

After Tamil producer R. B. Choudary had bought the rights of Vedam for a "hefty amount" to remake it in Tamil, his younger son Jeeva was initially supposed to play the role enacted by Allu Arjun in the original film, while either Namitha or Anushka Shetty were reported to essay the lead female role of Saroja. However, to the surprise of all, Silambarasan bagged the lead role, who had seen the original version and was immediately impressed by the "Cable" Raju character, and started shooting for the film from early July, while he was expected to work on Podaa Podi during that period. By accepting this film, Silambarasan was said to have lost the project with N. Linguswamy and Dayanidhi Azhagiri, who were unhappy about Silambarasan starting to shoot for this film without informing them and further delaying their film.
Meanwhile, Anushka was reported to have denied the offer, following which Taapsee Pannu, who was the female lead in Vetrimaran's Aadukalam, was considered for the prostitute character, Saroja. During the launch of the film then, sources claimed that Anushka, following her refusal, had been roped in by the producers for an item number only, which was specially included for the Tamil version and didn't feature in the original, for which she was supposedly paid an "exorbitant price". However, Anushka dismissed all these reports and eventually confirmed that she would reprise her role from the original, citing that "at no point did I refuse to be a part of this project". Mohan Babu's son Manoj Manchu was also supposed to reprise his original character and enact the rockstar role in Vaanam, but was forced to opt out, following an accident during the shoot of his Telugu film Jhummandi Naadam and had to undergo an operation. He was replaced by Bharath, who was approached by Silambarasan himself for the role and immediately agreed as he loved Vedam".
For the character essayed by Deeksha Seth in the original, Sneha Ullal was initially roped in. She was to make her Tamil debut with this film and play Silambarasan's love interest. Vega Tamotia was roped in to essay a rock musician, played originally by Lekha Washington, being paired opposite Bharath, while producer Ganesh would appear in a cameo role, too. In September 2010, Sonia Agarwal was also signed up for a pivotal role, returning to acting after four years, replacing Siya Gautham as Zara, the wife of Prakash Raj's character, which she was initially supposed to play in the original version itself, but eventually missed due to personal problems. Compared to the original, however, she cited that she would have more scenes and one "extra song". Prakash Raj himself, would play a Muslim, enacting Manoj Bajpai's role from the original. Noted Telugu actor Ravi Prakash was roped in to play the same role he did in the original version, making his Tamil film debut. However there was a turn of events in early 2011, as Sneha Ullal, who had already shot for significant portions, was replaced by Delhi-based model Jasmin Bhasin. Jasmin, who completed her portions in 15 days and also dubbed for herself, had initially auditioned for the rock musician role of Vega Tamotia. Furthermore, scenes shot with Jagan were removed from the project, and then filmed with Santhanam after Jagan had fallen out with Silambarasan. Mumbai work Coordinatar - Dinesh Nair, Mumbai,

Keeravani for Vedam's score, Yuvan Shankar Raja was approached and assigned as the music director of Vaanam to produce original songs and score, owing to his friendship with lead actor Silambarasan, who recommended him. In a novel attempt, the song "Evan Di Unna Pethan" was separately released as a single track to promote and popularise the film. The track was initially planned to be launched in London, but after several complications and delays, it was officially unveiled on 28 November 2010 at the Citi Center, Chennai, four months ahead of the actual audio launch.
While the original soundtrack consisted of eight tracks, the Vaanam soundtrack featured only five tracks, including the earlier released single. The entire soundtrack album was finally launched on 21 March 2011 at the Residency Towers in Chennai in a simple manner. Na. Muthukumar had penned lyrics for three songs, while the other two songs ("Evan Di Unna Pethan" and "Cable Raja") were penned by the singers themselves. Film composer Srikanth Deva had lent his voice for the fifth song, collaborating with Yuvan Shankar for the first time, as did the composer-duo Abhishek-Lawrence.
All lyrics written by Na. Muthukumar, except where noted.

Reception

The soundtrack received mixed reviews from music critics. Richard Mahesh from Behindwoods.com gave a 3/5 rating and said "‘Vaanam’ can be regarded as one of the Yuvan’s better composition and it is sure to make high waves now. While ‘Evandi Unna Pethan’, ‘Vaanam’ and ‘Who Am I’ touches the surpassing degrees on different styles, ‘Cable Raja’ and ‘No Money’ caters to the tastes of mass audiences." Kollywoodz said "On the whole, ‘Vaanam’ has a power-packed performance by Yuvan Shankar Raja. Sony BMG fetches one more feather to its cap following the huge success of ‘Engeyum Kadhal’ and ‘Ko’." Pavithra Srinivasan of Rediff gave a 2.5/5 rating and said "Like some of Yuvan's most recent albums, Vaanam too, scores in some areas: the number Vaanam and Who am I. The rest fall into the Yuvan template, while the appeal of Evandi Unnai Pethan is almost purely its in-your-face lyrics. For those who hoped for melodious numbers, this one might prove a dampener." Indiaglitz said "The audio album of Vaanam strikes an instant appeal. While all the songs are beautiful in their own right, Evandi Unna Pethan and No Money are picks of the lot, as both come with that special touch."

Release

The satellite rights of the film were bagged by Sun TV. The film was given a "U/A" certificate by the Indian Censor Board.

Critical reception

Vaanam garnered positive response. Behindwoods.com rated it as three and a half out of five, citing that the film was "succulent with diverse complex human emotions from deceit to greed to rage to remorse. The film has a plot that can find patrons among wider variety of audience as the theme of humanity is much a catholic one that transcends barriers", going to describe the film as an "intelligent fare with substance". Rediff's Pavithra Srinivasan rated it as three out of five and stated that Vaanam was "engaging", further adding that "if you ignore the minor lapses, you've got a reasonably engaging story, and a moving climax." Sify.com's critic felt the film was "very good", citing that the "this short story genre [...] manages to work well for the new age audience. Almost all the stories are deftly told, with the mandatory twist in the climax which keeps you riveted". The reviewer further praised the director and his team as they "push the cinematic envelope and bring savvy freshness to Tamil cinema". A reviewer from Indiaglitz.com wrote that Vaanam was a "novel attempt in Tamil cinema and Krish pulls it off well thanks to a beautifully conceived script and well-written characters", comparing the film to "reading a set of interesting short stories". A Oneindia critic claimed that "the first half was entertaining and the second half makes the audience to sit on the edge of their seats", while pointing out that "the common and mass audiences could not understand the story because of its clumsy nature". Krish was labelled as the "real hero" of the film and was lauded for "writing a ripping story, excellent screenplay and brilliant direction". Malathi Rangarajan from The Hindu said "Pithy, poignant, funny and serious as the situation warrants, dialogue (Gnanagiri) is a highpoint of Vaanam. Climax is another. Krish seems to have cut and pasted a few scenes from the Telugu original – they give a dubbed-film feel to Vaanam. Coming after the stupendous hit, VTV, Vaanam should be another significant film in STR's career."
In contrast, Rohit Ramachandran of nowrunning.com gave the film one out of five, stating that "Vaanam is an unrealistic film about uninteresting people that deadlocks into blandness." National Film Award winning critic Baradwaj Rangan wrote that his "glass-half-full side wants to deliver a smallish pat on Vaanam’s back and label it [...] a "praiseworthy attempt", especially within mainstream parameters", while the "glass-half-empty side" was "still shaking angry fists at what could have and should have been a milestone", criticising that "half the story strands are simply not interesting enough".

Box office

The film INR 90 lakhs at the Chennai box office in its first weekend, notably without much publicity. At the end of its seventh week, the film had collected INR 4.50 crore in Chennai alone and was declared a hit. The film crossed 10 weeks in Chennai.

Controversy

In August 2011, actor Bharath alleged that he did not receive much attention for being in the film and stated that he was completely "boycotted" during the film's promotions. He added that he was given favourable publicity during his first multi-starrer Pattiyal (2006), and that Vaanam gave importance only to "one particular actor" - its main lead Silambarasan. In response to this, Silambarasan said that he did not "have any say in promotions", which he claimed was the producer's decision, and added, "Though Mankatha is a multi-starrer, it is and it will be publicized as an Ajith film. Likewise, though popular actors like  and Srikanth are there in Nanban, it will be promoted as a Vijay starrer".

Plot

Velan, a young boy, lives with his younger half-brother Balan, stepfather (Nassar) and mother (Revathi) in Kattuppakkam in the Tirunelveli district. His stepfather is always partial towards Balan which constantly angers Velan.
Fifteen years later, a gang of robbers steal money from a bank and cause property damage while entering Kattuppakkam, when Velan (Silambarasan), now a cop going by the name "Osthe" Velan, apparently tries to recover the money by beating up the robbers. It becomes clear later that he keeps the money for himself, using it to buy new police jeeps and dividing it among his fellow cops (Santhanam, Thambi Ramaiah, Mayilsamy and Vaiyapuri). Velan still lives with his family and does not have a good relationship with his stepfather and Balan (whom he bullies at times).
Balan (Githan Ramesh) is in love with a girl called Nirmala (Saranya Mohan) whose father (Nizhalgal Ravi) opposes their relationship. Osthe Velan, meanwhile, falls in love with a girl called Neduvaali (Richa Gangopadhyay), whom he chances upon while chasing a gang of thugs.
Boxer Daniel (Sonu Sood), an aspiring politician and goon, meets Velan and tells him that the people he beat up and stole the money from are party workers and that they were getting money for the party. Velan is unperturbed, and dismisses him flatly. Balan asks his father to arrange his marriage with Nirmala, but his father refuses saying that he needs money to repay the loans he took to make his factory so he needs his son to marry a rich girl. Balan, in desperate need of money, steals it from Velan's cupboard, but is caught red-handed by his mother. He tells his mother that he intends to give the money to Nirmala's father, who in turn will return the money after marriage through dowry. Although his mother refuses, he takes the money and gives it to Nirmala's father.
Meanwhile, Velan meets Neduvaali and proposes marriage. She rejects it saying that she has to look after her father (VTV Ganesh), who is always drunk and that she cannot marry while he is alive. Velan then comes home to find his mother dead. He tries to make peace with his stepfather, as he is the only family left, but his stepfather says that Velan is not part of the family any more.
Velan is then attacked at the railway station by Daniel's men, when he is with Neduvaali and her father, but, he beats up all of them in a fight.
He sees Balan buying a horse and chariot, though he does not suspect that Balan stole the money. Balan tells him that he is getting married to Nirmala and invites Velan to the marriage. Velan tries to convince Neduvaali's father to give his daughter's hand in marriage to him and to stop drinking. Neduvaali's father accepts and after Velan leaves, he plunges into a lake and commits suicide, as he knows that his daughter will not marry anyone while he is alive. Velan takes Neduvaali to Balan's exuberant wedding and, honouring his mother's wish that her elder son be married first, marries Neduvaali in an impromptu ceremony. Nirmala's father feels disgraced and cancels the wedding.
Balan beats up one of the workers in his factory due to a small accident. The worker goes to the police station along with his mother to file a complaint. But instead Velan beats up Balan in public, thus disgracing him. Daniel decides to take advantage of the situation and suspend Velan. He takes Balan and his father to the police station. But Balan's father resolves the situation by accepting an apology from Velan. Velan meets the minister leading Daniel's party (Vijayakumar) who also dislikes Daniel. They both come to an agreement to keep Daniel in control. Velan adulterates the breweries of Daniel due to which many people fall ill and Daniel is blamed. Daniel is confronted by Velan who openly reveals to him that he adulterated the breweries.
To take revenge, Daniel burns Balan's factory. Balan's father gets a heart attack due to shock and is hospitalised. Balan, in desperate need of money for his father's treatment agrees to do anything for Daniel, without realising that it was Daniel who burnt his factory. Daniel gives him a task telling him to deliver a crate of mangoes to the minister' house. But, unknown to Balan, there is a bomb in it. After he leaves the house, it explodes, killing the minister and many innocents. Daniel gives Balan a task to kill Velan. Balan, knowing that he would not do it, accepts it and meets Velan. He confesses to Velan that he was sent to kill him by Daniel. He reveals to Velan that Daniel made him plant the bomb unknowingly. Velan forgives him and reconciles with his stepfather.
Balan meets Daniel, who thinks that Balan killed Velan and reveals to Balan that he had killed Balan's mother. Daniel is then informed that Velan is arriving with a huge police force. Balan reveals to Daniel that he did not kill Velan. In a final battle, Velan arrives and takes down all the goons and rescues Balan, leading to a final fight with Daniel. After Balan reveals to Velan that Daniel killed their mother, the two kill Daniel by forcing smoke into his mouth.
In a happy ending, Velan gets Balan married to Nirmala in the presence of their father.

Casting

After considering Bollywood actresses Sonakshi Sinha and Sonam Kapoor, Bengali actress Richa Gangopadhyay, who had starred in a number of Telugu ventures before, was roped in to portray the lead female character. Githan Ramesh was chosen to play the lead character's brother, while Sonu Sood would reprise his role from the original. Reports indicating that Madhu Shalini of Avan Ivan fame was signed to play Ramesh's pair in the film, were dismissed by Silambarasan, who clarified that Saranya Mohan had been finalised for the role. Producer-turned-actor VTV Ganesh, following collaborations with Silambarasan in Vinnaithaandi Varuvaayaa and Vaanam was signed to portray the father of the female lead character, played by Mahesh Manjrekar in the original version. The team took considerably more time to finalise the actress to perform the item number in the film. Sources reported that several actresses including Nayantara, Shriya Saran, Zarine Khan, Katrina Kaif, Bipasha Basu, Deepika Padukone, Mallika Sherawat and Vidya Balan were considered or even approached, with Sherawat eventually being selected.

Filming

The film was officially launched with a pooja held at the AVM studios in Chennai on 10 May 2011, while filming commenced on 26 June in Mysore. Silambarasan had hit the gyms to tone up his physique, on the contrary to Salman Khan who had undergone a special diet to shed his six pack abs. Silambarasan trained for an eight pack within 25 days for the climax scene as he wanted it to be the highlight of the film. The final schedule of the film was completed with a song shot in Dubai. Mallika Sherawat shot the anticipated item number "Kalasala" during late September and the first week of October in Chennai.

The soundtrack of Osthe was scored by S. Thaman. Silambarasan revealed that composer Yuvan Shankar Raja, who he generally collaborates with, had suggested to sign Thaman as the music director. Initially planned to be released on 6 October, the audio launch was pushed to 19 October 2011. The lyrics were written by Vaali and Yugabharathi, while Silambarasan penned the lyrics for the song "Pondaati", which would revolve around a "husband's praises for his wife." The equivalent version to the chartbusting "Munni Badnaam Hui" from the original was named "Kalasala". Shruti Haasan was reported to have rendered her voice in "Kalasala", but the rumours were denied and instead veteran singer L. R. Eswari had sung the song. "Osthe" was Thaman's first combo with Dharani who usually collaborates with Vidyasagar. "Neduvaali" and "Vaadi Vaadi" has been reused from Thaman's own compositions from Telugu film Mirapakaay.
Elements of "Kalasala Kalasala" were also sampled in the song "Don't Sell Out" by rapper Tinie Tempah.
